IAIAsa Pre-Conference Training & Events - Tuesday 15 August 2017

In order for IAIAsa conference delegates to maximise the benefit of their travel spend IAIAsa facilitates the delivery of pre-confernce training courses on the day immediately prior to conference. 

This year three training courses are on offer:

Pre-Conference Training Course 1 - Effective Integration of Social & Health Issues in EIA

Pre-Conference Training Course 2 - Interpretation and application of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended)

Pre-Conference Training Course 3 - Public Participation in Environmental Authorisation

The training courses will run on Tuesday 15 August 2017 from 08h30 - 17h00 at Goudin Spa  

Please note the following with regard to all courses offered above: 

  • Closing Date for registrations and payment is 28 July 2017
  • Until payment has been received, registration for the training course cannot be confirmed.
  • The cost of the course is inclusive of refreshments, lunch and training materials.
  • Delegates who request de-registration on or before 28 July 2017 will be entitled to a 50% refund of their course fee. No refunds are possible for de-registrations requested after this date. De-registrations must be submitted in writing to the Conference Organiser, at operations@iaiasa.co.za, in order to receive a refund. A delegate who de-registers may ask the Conference Organiser to transfer their registration to a colleague.
  • The minimum number of delegates required for each course to be financially viable is Course 1 - 20 delegates, Course 2 - 15 delegates, Course 3 - 15 delegates.
  • IAIAsa reserves the right to cancel the course if there are insufficient delegates to make it financially viable.
  • We will inform you by 1 August 2017 if there are sufficient delegates to run the course. In the event that the course of your choice is cancelled you are entitled to a full refund. You may elect to transfer your registration and payment to any other alternative course on offer. 
  • Refunds will be processed after the Conference.
  • Refunds for no shows are not possible.

Pre-Conference Training Event 1 - Effective Integration of Social & Health Issues in EIA

Have you in recent times become aware of the importance of integrating social and health issues into your EIA's but wished you had better skills in that department? 

International trainer Bryony Walmsley will spend a day providing you with the tools to improve your skills for effectively integrating these vital issues into your EIA's.

This course is aimed at an Intermediate to Advanced Level government authorities and environmental consultants

Participants should have at least 5 years’ experience in EIA either as part of an EIA team or as team leader or as an EIA reviewer.  The purpose of the course is to to assist anyone who manages, writes or reviews an EA to: 

•    Understand the concept of Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) and motivate why it is essential to improve the effectiveness of EIA and to deliver on sustainable development goals;
•    Provide guidance on how to manage the EIA process to achieve IEM;
•    Provide practical tools on how to integrate health and social issues in an holistic manner.

Pre-Conference Training Event 2 - Interpretation and application of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended)

Have the 2014 EIA Regulations presented some challenges for you and your clients? 

Share the knowledge and insight gained by Smith Ndlovu Summers Attorneys and Environmental Law Specialists - Sibonelo Ndlovu, Richard Summers, Katherine Handley, and Megan Donald as they highlight the difficulties of interpretation and implementation of particular provisions in the legislation with the aim of empowering participants on how to deal with such difficulties in future in order to ensure EIA ‘best practice’ in impact assessment..

This course is aimed at an Intermediate Level

All participants should have a basic knowledge of the content and scope of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations, 2014 (as amended) (the EIA Regulations) in order to facilitate productive engagement during the training course.

It is not necessary for participants to have experience in any particular sector, as the training course will be aimed at practitioners who work with the EIA Regulations in any capacity (including government officials, Environmental Assessment Practitioners (EAPs), lawyers, project managers).

Pre-Conference Training Event 3 - Public Participation in Environmental Authorisation 

Public Participation has always played a significant role in Environmental Authorisation. Doing it well requires a thorough understanding of the process, the psychology of genuine engagement, and most importantly the interested and affected parties and stakeholder mix with whom the particpation will take place. 

IAP2 Trainers Tisha Greyling and Erika du Plessis, life-time facilitators and expert masters in public particpation training whose names are well-known in the environmental and social world and the African Region for their outstanding passion and enthusiasm, will present a 1 Day Training Course focusing on public participation in environmental authorisation – theory and practice in integrated environmental management.
